The Story of Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative

Minn-Dak has a rich history that dates back to the 1970s, when a group of sugarbeet farmers formed Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative. Below is a timeline of events that have made Minn-Dak what it is today.

Late 1930s First efforts made to get a sugarbeet factory in Wahpeton/Breckenridge
1950 - 1970 Active efforts by farmers and business people to obtain factory and an acreage allotment from the US Department of Agriculture
August 30, 1972

Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative officially formed

September 25, 1972 First Minn-Dak grower acreage signup
February 3, 1973 Factory groundbreaking
February 26, 1973 Construction begins
March 25, 1973 Minn-Dak Board of Directors elected
April 8, 1974

North Central Sugar Marketing officially formed

April 19, 1974 First Minn-Dak beets planted by Richard Yaggie
September 7, 1974 Factory dedicated
October 1, 1974 First campaign gets underway with an estimated 800,000 tons of beets
April 23, 1979

Midwest Agri-Commodities officially formed

July 11, 1989 Minn-Dak Yeast Company officially formed
January 1, 1994 United Sugars Corporation officially formed
January 1995 Minn-Dak expansion begins
December 1999 Expansion completed

Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative is located in Wahpeton, a city in the southeast corner of North Dakota, in the heart of the
Red River Valley. Minn-Dak's shareholders produce sugarbeets for processing at the cooperative's plant in Wahpeton.

Minn-Dak is part of the domestic sweetener industry and currently has over 450 shareholders.

Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative is the owner of Minn-Dak Yeast Company, located adjacent to the Cooperative in Wahpeton.
