2008 Crop Update

Monday, August 18:

The Ag staff will be sampling the crop this week (Aug 18-20). The lab will run on Thursday, Aug 21 and the current estimate will be revised. I would expect a one to two ton per acre uptick at that time from the current 19.4 tons per acre.

Infection values have been active the past two weeks. This is a critical time to make sure you have a healthy canopy for maximum sugar production. To that end make sure you are aware of where you are with your fungicide program.

August 7: Here is some further clarifcation of the new Minnesota Weight Law from Greg Hayes Minnesota Statewide Truck Weight Education Coordinator:

"I received a call from one of your growers concerned about the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) issue on the new 90,000 agricultural weight increases.  He was under the impression (when talking to another grower) that this permit supersedes the previous sugarbeet permit.   That is not true.

The old permit is alive and well and the same rules apply as before  (not valid on county and township routes).  Also the GVWR is not an issue when using the older permit as those increases were percentages on the old weight table and did not require compliance with the new federal bridge chart.

So, if you want to let the growers know that the new law is optional for sugarbeets  (and any other raw and unprocessed agricultural commodity). The gross vehicle weight rating issues applies only if applying for the new permit…not the sugarbeet harvest permit.
